places for kids to go to we have added a new station where they can get a chef salad parfaits sub sandwiches bigger peanut butter and jelly sandwiches we have more options everyday so I feel that we're giving them everything they need and I just feel that when kids leave I don't think that's a good option so that's just mine you sound so thank you good evening my name is Thompson oh thank you for allowing me to speak this evening I've been attending school board meetings for quite some time including the work session last week in which the superintendent the administration team and teacher represent who share their educational vision for the disc my understanding this was in response to the vision questions submitted by the board collectively as a board and individual as board member you have an obligation and a duty to govern the operations of the PCM District this include asking the tough questions gathering information to make him decisions not EZ Pass so I commend you for challenging our Mastery she and our Educators but where does it State the board and its members are considered or will act as the experts in determining the most effective and appropriate means towards achieving the best education experience possible for all of our students you ask the question the administration and teachers or educational experts in a school district gave you answers and from where I sat last week the board Collective response came across as it's not Wally presented a few specific changes for 2024 and 2025 school year which I fully support and so should this bored I felt the board miss the bigger picture they are simply asking for your support their Collective Vision the collective Edge they didn't ask for an immediate commitment to everything presented they express their interest and their desire to work together with the board to achieve their Bishop so my question is why is it so difficult for this board to Simply pressing could be its support of their Vision why are you stuck on eating more data when the test scores paint the picture for you why do you routinely ask for more more information I will always be an individual who believes academics is a district number one priority as I said before every student who walks into any of our educational for please has a right to a solid education and learning opportunities extracurricular activities and Athletics as much as I enjoy them those are a privileged participation in these is earned not given but in order to ensure the educational right of a student have the facilities to support such an environment whether that's an addition of the classrooms or an addition of classrooms and a gym is easy to see how all of this connects and those lines were connected with in division presented last week we will struggle to achieve academic excellence great alignment and proper facility accommodations a lot of parents and community members are engaged in how the school district will adjust to the challenges facing us today such as declining enrollment lack of facilities based more looking back to the previous November there are quite a few with an a sitting in your chair our communities are changing on a regular basis and the district must find ways to keep adjusting its practices facilities and vision keep paste the board's practice of waiting for the perfect answer and ask asking questions over and over again is out it's time for this board to step up and start listening and supporting the experts I would like to share my thoughts took place on Tuesday February 13th want to thank everyone and share their thoughts and ask questions regarding the desire District dr. ringel asked why there was no data to support their conclusions a my opinion data is pretty much useless because you can find David to support or refute any recommendation instead look at the testing of the 4th and 5th grade simply merge all the information that is needed as I am sure before my mother was a fifth grade teacher for over 30 years one of her biggest frustrations and teaching the school board's not listening to the school leadership or teachers were telling them as you recall last Tuesday night when did the admin teams share their thoughts with teacher said the same they're telling you what they need or what they need to succeed and in doing so we're saving the school district money and more importantly how this recommendation would impact the kids will educate an emotionally and that is what this decision is about doctor angle you also said that this is a business decision and that statement is incorrect this is an education at decision if I were sitting in your seat I would favor of this recommendation I am not an education and not an educator so I would I would be relying on those in the field for the fact-based information which I believe has been done I'm a real estate appraiser so how could I ignore Educators telling me what they need or do not need to do their job successfully that is like me going into a house that Ryan is wiring and telling him that he's doing it wrong mr. steam Peter you asked if a video could be made to share what is being present everyone sitting here or elected to make decisions on the resident we have it is your job to look listen and analyze the information that is presented and make an informed not an emotional but an informed decision simple do you see the benefits of this recommendation cost money and we'll a bond need to go to vote if supported absolutely cause of continually going up Ryan 20 years ago to Prairie City Fire Department asked the city to build a new fire station $800,000 today that fire station is costing the city almost three million to build if we do not act now the cost of these improvements could be astronomical doctor havenstrite share that this Vision that was presented was discussed before she was hired for you the time for talk and continual Quest the question is over and it's a decision needs to be made now if the board supports this proposal I'll be the first one in line to advocate for passing a bond the benefits and the impact it could have on the kids Educators and both can both communities stronger together remember this decision is not about keeping up with the Joneses Joneses but keeping us competitive with other school district this recommendation is not for anyone to pad the resume is simply about the kids and the future PCM Generations thank you I sent emails and spoke about the poor communication in this District before but I think we really need to take this seriously we just spent almost nine housing for the creation of a PCM app which does a good job telling everyone about school sports and menus we've also have emails texts and phone calls for snow days and we have other notifications are for school happenings by all communication to do at the school board meeting I'm jealous and minutes is completely inadequate over the last year the information that is included in the agendas and minutes for public review online is even less than it has been previously again this appears to be by Design and controlling of the narrative last week the board works it was not posted anywhere on Facebook or through email if I had not been told of the meeting by a staff member I probably would not have known it was taking place and I feel I try to pay attention to what is happening so then how ironic it was during a meeting for the question to be asked to Ministry S2 at the public actually knew they were free to attend the meeting or proposals presented at the last work session asking for the board to act just seems ridiculous that the public will not be informed of a meeting with so much potential impact on the future of the district we're told repeatedly about the importance of all stakeholders in the district this sentiment was repeated again during the sciac meeting about the vision plan for the administration what they request for a feedback to that plan look into various lenses of examination then 2 weeks later. do you change behind closed doors with paper covering the windows what exactly are we doing here is our opinion actually really matter I know as I speak for myself and quite a few others that feel any time questions are you going to ask there's an effort to shut up where are we with the novo in Phase 2 we paid a lot of money for a design rebuilt or a facilities skip a face to include engaging the community Through events and stakeholders in it's not advertised work session on Tuesday night about the silly changes sufficient near my house for Community engagement I would hope I certainly hope not was talking to work session about Troublesome amount of rumors around the community full of wrong information a simple way to fix that would be actual factual timely and open communication I don't just meet update notifications about the next basketball game these are major topics that affect everyone moving forward with necessitates get it right with respected input from all stakeholders we have to do better thank you my name is Becky party, I have children currently enrolled in the district at any both Elementary School I have concerns of the great alignment plan being considered by the board doesn't have to come sent us here a few points to consider it's a poor use of her kids only blocks from school and it sent already long bus rides Brothers their promises and every student in the district was bus to the other school for multiple years during their time in elementary dispensing amounts to 50 minutes per day and Counting two rides loading and unloading this equates to at least 21 full day's worth of a Time wasted per student each year does insufficient process has buses arrive in to school half hour early so that many could just wait around for others catch another bus how to create complications for family with kids pending both schools family strongly consider when choosing where to live for them to tell us we have issues or train at a particular School which school that could be you could change at a given time then the right response is to focus our efforts and resources I'm fixing that underlying problem rather than minimizing its appearance and making it less obvious 3 trade alignment has already been tried and deemed a failure other local school districts for example elementary school until Middle School academic research shows that students benefit from minimal building transition more time classroom and less time sitting on the bus why would PCM with even longer bus rides in the more geographically spread-out environments move to a nun has an unsuccessful model for our ministration to justify this proposal with well-rounded academic Reese and there should be a transparent process with Community involvement on the country seems Administration wishes to push this proposal through while drying as little attention as possible we're being told that in vague terms it's a better use of resources and will increase clabber but what are the concrete benefits for our kids for all the obvious downfalls I personally do multiple families living in a district for the object to open enroll to other neighboring districts because they don't make sense I certainly want the best for all I just don't feel that this proposed the great alignment coffee is the best way to get there if we continue on this plan it won't be surprising when the district enrollment continues to decline and it's funny he continues to decline year after year I understand this approach is well-intended but I feel as misguided I'm much stronger more well recent case must be provided to the parents of PCM before further great alignment is approved from the board thank you hey my name is bad nearby I'm going to shift gears a little bit from wasn't by myself as a candidate for Jasper County supervisor and then maybe it's a little bit unusual for a candidate for supervisor to come to school board meeting but this is my phone just a couple miles north of where we custom feed Hogs and so I just wanted to let you guys know who I am when I'm doing and I am pretty interested to hear what's going on with the board so I'll hang around a little bit and maybe talk to some people it looks like it might run a little bit late so we'll controversy regarding having the caucus at the school Republican caucus and we got that end I know the weather wasn't great but we got it done and won't work very well so if whoever is responsible until said thank you for that which is unusual for me three years I've watched politics that I am you sing cable news so this way into what's going on in our own local area a little bit the name-calling falling out people's reputations many on the board many of the staff members who work within the school superintendent all around it's just a crying shame that where we got into my here a lot of arguments and everybody in the crowd talking about data points and perhaps the best thing for us to do is to pass we made a big change in this District a year ago or a couple years ago bring our 5th grade together and analyze that information we have one data point from that one and I'm not really interested in whatever said he comes to whatever to her place that datapoint generally was a deposit. But we don't have a train yet we don't know last year weather that's going to go on and become another step forward or we don't know where we're going to go backwards but I do think is important to me and Liza data for our district and how it affects our kids and make a decision based on that information not necessarily what have outside of this that being said I think it's also important for those that are putting in extra time myself included I was in a Maasai a committee that is currently together but I was on the building and building lead to made it we had before this a lot of us put in a lot of that late at night coming in offering input talking about what direction want the school to go I think that we have a really good picture about what this looks like and I think they're really good ideas and came up with their I really think we need to keep moving that direction but I don't think it's wise do blaster in a year or two years I think that is important for us to take our time and analyzing information making progress to make him up make a move when they make sense so yeah it is there if we're going to be passing a bond I'm in favor of it at whatever time it is now sorry for us to do that but I do think it's important for us to keep track of any straight things like that that's all important for us to consider overall I just think we need to pause that your time move on make an educated decision I also include making sure we don't shut down the people whenever they're out here talking and whenever there are extra talking I think that we do need to do a better job of listening and just understanding the everybody in here has good intentions to our kids in the kids the tennis District nobody gets a new school board I walked into a classroom to come in a minute straight or a teacher to harm kids nobody does everybody here is trying to do the best they can create the best results and sometimes we're going to disagree cleared but let's pause let's take steps for make sure that we're not making steps now but don't that set us back and we try to record on a vision I think it's important for your all the board members to make sure we get on board that Vision including telling us how much right hey you know maybe I'm not in favor of doing it doing a Bonds in a year maybe I'll be in for three years we don't know what's going to happen if I mean as a doubt for years ago for your time Christina I would not have said that I moved to Monroe three years ago I'm from Des Moines I had a daughter I wanted her in a small town with the school clothes I grew up in you and thought that was a little too big even when Supply coming from Des Moines wanted her in a small town last week I attended a Valentine's Day party and I was told hey do you know your daughter really third grade of hang so then I see it on Facebook somebody posted third grade my next turn tell Christian bus comes every morning if I'm going to put my kid on a bus to hop over crazy to me driving to Prairie City Communications pretty sad what's really sad is sitting in this do people come up here talk scene School District employees with rolled her eyes and Sean people that are sitting here talking and it's pretty sad I substitute for the school district that I hear teachers I don't know if I like the bench eat more that people want to talk to me but I feel like they're on valued here compared to Prairie City Elementary the plans to shut down when should we bring Middle School over here and then try it and it I took the stuff from your employees that's pretty sad but that's how people are here and things it's pretty sad as a parent I'm being told my kid to go to Party City next to the first time I told about it I need to hear to have my kid clothes I moved here to not mess with buses I moved here from Des Moines for a small-town feel I'm disappointed 3 years I'm disappointed thank you play one more to read here are members of the board is reporting that parent-teacher conference all in the same night as a board meeting as you know and I'll make sure to how to prioritize in a board meeting would have been here tonight if at all possible due to the complex I am presenting this letter on behalf of some PCM elementary teachers as those in the trenches we want our voices to be heard by the board and those present night meeting we should show our support for our PCM Ministry and the proposed division of uniting PCM Elementary Warren Elementary Under One Roof at school leaders to preserve the Lyman Elementary hours of operation brainstorming and problem-solving hadn't been trying to plan that is best for ensuring a strong Foundation we support our ministry addition to align PCM Elementary in one location knowing that it may require Insurance steps along the way we began this process over two years ago First Step was to buy and trade land with the continued great together as face with figured out you're already we are ready to move forward with their grade combined next year this plan will get all pissy on 3rd to 5th grade students under the under the same room while I continue to work to order in I mean preschool through About the great one for the good mornings are you guys working schedule mortgage news work session to discuss when we go laughing last Tuesday that's good news to me that we have the ministrator is to put the time in the Olympics you're making people uncomfortable that's greater and we need to be read to look at as a board we need to look at all the stuff we've been sitting in the same spot for a lot of years 10 years ago but now different situation that we don't have a lot of teachers teachers of Industry now to deal with vouchers sorry but awareness now or what we need to do after the 4th is invited me and I appreciate that so that's good news to me what number is things that you seen around campus we like to celebrate so a couple things are athletic teams of all had a great postseason really excited about that representing Stowell James was rocking really that's a lot of people there was so much really a lot of fun energy so that came out to support you have an app I want to thank the people games that work on that are director of communications Tappan Zee High and Tyler green Tyler is here thank you so much behind the scenes that you don't see me you don't hear them a lot but it took a lot of time to get the app and so this is a great way not just for parents because we can connect with a grandparent see how do I get those announcements I can get those things so we're really excited so we've been working all summer staff and felt like if we're going to try to rise up the antenna to their students and staff as well and I'm super excited for the board the exceptional attendance we had an exceptional year most of the time our staff last year the last three years was subs and all the shortage staffing issues were big I can tell you that we really are having a huge Improvement shown by that list. yard work over there on the office gals I don't do it for myself but exceptional attendance on the outside of every door as a motive as well so they can come by and see if I can get to do it and lastly a shout-out I doubt they're listening but maybe someone is associated with a bummer and the plumbers Steamfitters union is coming to provide upgrades in our welding boots for free so we're super excited and will thank them for we need to stay up to date in route to the consent agenda beautifulnara it's going right track dates you're ready made it aboard now's your opportunity to ask questions. a.m. I think that's a lot of businesses are get your work done when you don't really care you know long as everything's done and and you're not missing out on anything so it was a successful at the middle school to 3% and it didn't really like it. it was worthwhile in raw teachers when they needed to I would say it works well for most kids honestly like Sam said something that made you didn't work so well it didn't work so well for I'm so maybe I'm a little bit better in the future would be important I do think it gave our students an opportunity to engage in an online platform for a class or so students who haven't done it yet there's a lot of students that maybe take a college course online already and are used to that I know that online learning but some of our kids were able to log on and see it and see how it works maybe I know it's not so bad a gave him an opportunity to have that it you're handsome in the Washington they needed to and just making sure the fat content was relevant to what was going on in the classroom was something that was really really important for I have a couple come in and actually ask a question in person I'm to just work in representative on our board has to be great time I think Susan I was right about when we did not think that the teachers did a really good job of explaining going to be on the Google meet I want to join that was not an delete our lots of options. okay we want the business items District science of reading so what we're getting started what is the color line and place my name is his CDs for those of you who may be Elementary principal I'm really thankful to build a share about this tonight I am passionate about this work and I will say this is my third year and something I would really like to see the board asked more questions about his actual academic learning other students I feel like I answer many questions about lunch menus and buses and whether their students to wear a jacket not jacket but I don't really ever heard anyone say what do you think which a my view is really really important and as a mom I know I care a lot about what my kids learn at school so I'm sure the other parents want to know what their kids are at school so I hope that we can start to have more conversations around how to grow our academics I'm so one of the things we're going to talk about today the science of read and why we are starting to talk about the science of reading a couple of reasons when I came here three years ago we had significantly low test scores and reading and reading accuracy are students were struggling to read I don't think that was transparently shared but that was that was the truth there were many middle schoolers and we have Middle School people here to be able to share that with you that were many students going to middle school without reading and writing stuff and if you know anything just overall confidence in advocacy of a person they need to be able to fluently read in it no matter what you do and so I think it's important enough that it's something we should talk about once in a while and so tonight I'm going to talk about the science of reading and share a little bit about the goals for PCM Elementary so first of all definition but it's important it's a vast interdisciplinary body a scientifically based research about reading and issues relating to reading and writing so the science has five Decades of research behind it it's nothing new it's it's worth that the interdisciplinary peace is not just an education research is education the Neuroscience research on the linguistic research there's a lot of research and meta-analysis that goes in the science of reading so in the year two thousand one of the most important studies of all time was a national reading panel came out with their 5T thing that students should learn and literacy and that was for logical awareness phonics fluency vocabulary and comprehension I'm sure you've heard those terms in with your parent conferences or so these five pillars of Islam learning to read are all necessary this shift over the past few years has been the research of science is showing us these things need to be taught more explicitly than they once were and we'll talk about that so there are two Senate bills right now and I'm not an expert at this but I'll do my best to explain where they're at and what's going on but there are two bills right now I said Bill 3155 requires colleges to train teachers on the science of reading this is very exciting because our colleges or not equipping our teachers on anybody that comes out as a first-year I've never acted this long time I've trained over 100 new teachers and they will tell you I didn't really learn how to teach reading but it really I didn't really learn a lot of that so there's a lot of pressure lately under the teacher service programs to get that research and learning and teacher seems so hopefully if this bill passes the teachers will be required to have that learning there's another part of it really will have to pass a test sadly I think that's not happening right concerning to me that we don't have to pass the test to teach kids but we would also get about 9 million dollars in training for current Educators so that's a bill happening right now and if you keep current with those you probably know that another bill is 3069 and it elevates the science of reading and it actually band the three queuing system to you most likely but it means a lot to Any teacher it's the way we were taught to teach years ago it was a more of a pretty look at the pictures more of a balanced literacy and so far this is so we know that a science of reading is something that even at the state level there's light at Acacia and we feel very perfect do something really mean about reading is not the human brain is not developed is not have to learn to read so the human brain, the insects make letters sound connection nor does it develop naturally without instruction however so I've been reading teacher for 23 years and I was saying last biggest change is that we need to go more of a speech-to-text we did a text to speech so if you think about that we naturally can see that's a skill we can actually do and then we take it to text so a little bit of a shift in how we learn to read so it's just don't learn to read so this is the study of 1986 of the simple view of reading this is probably one of the most popular studies in terms of elements created and what we look at here is the decoding and the language equal to reading comprehension reading comprehension is our ultimate goal reading students can read and understand the theories however to get there we have to have the phonics the phone logical awareness the word study work and the language still listening comprehension both of these are important and then ultimately tree I comprehend a student that can read it. Read something answer questions about it at the level of which stay at Grizzle okay so we're going to leave the green just a little bit this is a reading brain and we use the left hemisphere of our brain for reading and their different lobes of the brain and each different part of the brain is actually responsible for a part of how the reading process works sometimes you'll hear people say my sister just went a little differently how to read or study this summer we're us doctor shared with us every the brain is wired what students need to access that is a little different so the strategy some kids need more reteaching but we do know how kids learn to read when you when you think about the brain why is Early Childhood so important when we talk about why are we always talking about early literacy well there's something called neuroplasticity and neural plasticity of the bill that the Rings the neurons and the give me the actually change and grow and they in there they're flexible you can manipulate that starts in the lower grades and baia. 10 years old it takes about four times longer to learn to read and write so that's why this for our students are out of elementary school that's why I keep saying strong Foundation strong Foundation our students need to read before they leave school it takes that much longer and I can think of it through a lens of just I want my suit Siri you can maybe thing is real and said that means more reading teachers that means more time that means more more support I'm so we're going to keep going here so let's take the brain and break it down now to the actual process of reading and Heather's going to pass out a paper for you so the brain that we just talked about that left hemisphere and although glow we have something called a four-part processor and the four-part processor is does study the work that we use to decide our curriculum so if you would say to me how do you decide on how do you despise decide on a all of these four things happen with a millisecond so down here we had the orthographic and the phonological processing remember we learn speech innately and so from our phonological That's Her speech a student here say the sound and then they hear they see it as a letter S as a symbol S in their house so they hear the town they see the symbol and then it goes up to meeting so let's use the word witch and a millisecond faster than week a student hears the facts and then they go to the orthopedic and see where they are now I got to find the letters switch because we've learned after church my kids read your children research other because we can do this at school and we need your help doing this 78 80% maybe even more of our struggles are down here and this is where his struggle mostly and or the graphic and so logical and so we know that this has to be explicitly taught our students and that we know we have to continue to grow this meeting and language at the same time we had a whole pretty lamp for each part of this which could be something we share in a different time but this is how I resources so we definitely don't just take the pain so in front of you is actually our second grade literacy block I don't know if you remember this or any be there in education back in the day when I first started teaching videos what was called a reading baseball and that really they still had all the things it had to work for phone logical awareness for spelling for comprehension and if you were ever a teacher to talk to Basel you hate and so you wanted to get rid of it but we're really excited about is that we have worked very hard at peace and Elementary so when you ask what does it mean to be assigned to bring School what's in front of you is what it means so we taking every one of those Five Pillars from The Bachelorette panel in 2003 by Dennis I'd the resources that go with that based on the research of how the brain learns to read every one of our grade levels has the, consistent literacy the circus a long time to build is ever-changing if we learn something new we're updating it and it might look a little different in third grade their literacy box will
